We have been holding ONLINE AUCTIONS for more than 20 years !!

The estate liquidation business is changing.

There will always be those nostalgic for the old ways of buying...going to auctions held on the lawn of an estate along with dozens of other folk, spending hours hoping to get a bargain...or camped out at the front door of a home waiting for the tag sale to begin while hoping the item you want will be there in the condition that you want it, at the price you want to pay. That you will be the first one to get to that item so no one else will have the opportunity to buy it before you.

WE MUST KEEP UP WITH THE TRENDS!

STAY CURRENT & RELEVANT!

Increasingly the most interested buyers in the market ready,  willing & able, to purchase items secondhand (i.e.: Antiques, Quality Used Furniture, Unique Artwork, Designer Clothing, Estate Jewelry, Decorative Accessories and Every Day Household Items) are a younger crowd. These are the under 40 age group (even under 30 truth be told). People that get all their news from their phone...stay in contact with their friends, trust it for navigation and do all their BUYING on the internet! The computer in their pocket is almost an extension of themselves...like another hand! They do not have the time to spend on the "old" way of shopping for a bargain. It is too time consuming for today's buyer!

WE CAN HELP!!

Do you have an ESTATE to settle? Do you have a collection or single item of quality to sell?

WE CAN HELP!!

We are never going to go back to doing things the way that we used to in “pre-pandemic” times. We need to change the way we live our lives…...and move forward! We need to protect ourselves and those that we come into contact with.

The “delta” variant of the coronavirus is much more infectious and dangerous than the first iteration of the virus that the world suffered. The world is in a war against a tiny enemy. We seem to be winning the war here in the United States yet losing some battles in the fight. The war is not over!

We all need to remain vigilant if we hope to end this war. We cannot go back to doing “business as usual”. We do not need to crawl into a cave and wait for the virus to go away yet we do need to take reasonable precautions when going about our daily lives. Avoid crowded places whenever possible, wear masks when you must enter a crowd, wash your hands frequently. Simply be aware of our actions and take those simple steps that will help us avoid danger.

Estate Consultants has come up with a solution for the liquidation of the personal property in estates. It is a series of well thought out steps designed to maximize the amount of money you get from the items that you want to sell. Our “new” system is safe, simple, utilizes cutting edge technology and social media marketing. It is the future !

If you have an entire estate, collection or single item of quality to sell please contact Estate Consultants to discuss our plan for your path to the most profitable liquidation of your valued possessions.

Home located at

115 Paddock Drive, Dewitt, NY

The McLean family came to Utica, NY from Scotland in the early 19th century. They established the very successful "McLean's Cleaning & Dyeing Company" & a Fur Company in that City. Ms. Lucy McLean passed away at the age of 96. Lucy along with her sister Ellen never married. A third sister, Fredericka, married late in life, was widowed and moved in with her sisters in the home that they purchased in 1963 in Dewitt, NY. They lived together in this home at 115 Paddock Drive until Fredericka's death in 2006 and Ellen’s passing in 2012. Lucy died in 2020. She was the recipient of many beautiful family heirlooms through the years including her sister’s things. The car in the garage was last registered in 2013. The car, like the house contents, has remained “untouched” for many years! Ms. McLean was protective of her belongings, many of which date back for generations, and looked after them with great care. Estate Consultants are honored to offer the antiques and other personal property in the Estate of Lucy Jane McLean with select additions for your consideration. NOTE

COVID 19 PANDEMIC UPDATE regarding ESTATE SALES

We are heading into a period of increased infection from a Virus that the scientists do not truly have a handle on yet. The experts tell us that it is a highly contagious, elusive and, at times, deadly Virus that is continually mutating. Those who catch it may show no sign of sickness yet may be a carrier and pass the Virus along to other people unknowingly. The long term effects of this disease are yet to be determined, because the Virus is just over a year old, but the preliminary reports are not good. We are afraid that there will be areas of our country where the Virus will become out of control in the coming weeks and months. Help is on the way with vaccines and better therapeutics yet mass distribution is slow and the vaccine will be resisted by many. The government may need to shut down all activity in those areas hardest hit by the pandemic for a period of time while the flare-ups are stamped out. There may be a rolling closure of the economy in areas.

We cannot afford to stop doing business or we will have no business left when the pandemic is over. We must fight back ! We feel that the “new system” that we have developed is the safest way to conduct the business of personal property liquidation. Social distancing is key (along with mask wearing, sanitizing, etc.). It is not safe to gather in groups of more than a few people. Conventional sales and auctions with crowds of people are out of the question ! Most folks would rather not risk catching the Covid Virus by attending a sale in an enclosed space like an auction gallery, private home or under a tent. For many reasons they still need to buy & sell though. Our liquidation system provides the answer.

Through accurate product identification, detailed descriptions, multiple photographs of every item, prompt response to questions, an easy starting price and arranging to have items shipped anywhere in the world. Estate Consultants keeps the experience safe, exciting & fun while maintaining fair prices and offering unique estate items.

In the past (before the pandemic) only items with a value of $100.00 or more individually were deemed suitable to present to a national audience via online auction. With our new system all items begin at just $5.00 where they end…..the buyer decides !! Virtually every item in the auction will sell. We can present items to folks that in the past would only been available to a local audience that would attend the sale in person. Now we can sell everything from pots & pans to Fine Paintings…..from a paper towel roll holder to a Rolls Royce !! Contact Estate Consultants to see how we can make selling a single item, collection or entire estate easy & profitable. If you are on the buying end of things be sure to keep an eye on our website for exciting upcoming events !

Estate Consultants is continually searching for ways to make selling and buying safer, easier and more fun ! We are open to any suggestions that may make the experience more enjoyable.

Thank you

Stay safe

PAST SALE - The Mark Laskowski Estate

DECEMBER 18th, 2020

SELLING ? - BUYING ?

To our present & future clients

We have now held many estate liquidation auctions under our “new” system. Selling  thousands of items with a total revenue of more than $200,000.00. From the perspectives of the seller, the buyer and us (Estate Consultants - the facilitator) the system is a success ! Not only has the system performed well it has performed exceedingly well ! From cleaning & arranging the merchandise to inspecting & evaluating those items to be sold to to writing the catalog descriptions & photographing the items to advertising the sale around the country (the world really) to answering the many of questions that come to conducting an orderly, properly executed and well timed auction to accepting all forms of payment (cash, checks, all major credit cards, bank transfers, etc.) to making shipping arrangements for those items that need to shipped to making pick up arrangements for those items that sell locally to arranging for after sale clean up…….this system does it all !!

These are sales that would have been "tag sales" before the Covid Pandemic and marketed to a local audience only. "Every cloud has a silver lining" as the saying goes ! We were forced to rethink the way we conducted business because of the Corona Virus. Before Covid it would take us months to build an auction that was "good enough" to be presented to a national audience. Because the "old way" of conducting an auction was so very expensive we would select only the most valuable items from an estate to be presented in our auction venue. The remainder would be left to be sold in a tag sale that was only advertised and available locally to a crowd of people that could actually physically attend the sale. These folks would stand in line on sale day with the hope that the item was what they thought it was........... at the price that they wanted to pay............. and that they would be the first one through the door so as to have the opportunity to buy it ! No more ! With our new system all items are marketed to an audience across the country and around the world ! The audience sets the selling price. If you want to own an item all you need to do is be the high bidder at the end of the auction. No more lines of people no more crowds. With our new system buyers may ask questions or ask for pictures well in advance of the sale date, arrange for safe, private viewing before the sale and either place bids before the auction date (bids are confidential and bid competitively for the buyer) or make it an exciting and entertaining event on auction night ! Since normal forms of recreation like going out to restaurants, bars and movie theatres is less safe these days, Estate Consultants hold their auctions on Friday nights so as to make for a fun and safe form of entertainment ! Also the events are available on a timely basis to buyers on both coasts and everywhere in between. The sales do not to interfere with the weekend's plans ! Items are shipped or pick ups are made by appointment keeping in mind social distancing, mask wearing, sanitizing, etc.

Whether you have a single item of quality, a collection of items or an entire estate with a multitude of different types of items this is the way to sell ! Contact Estate Consultants & see how the system can work for you ! Remember- PASS THE WORD ! (Recent client references available upon request)

Stay safe

Sincerely

Estate Consultants

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAVE SOMETHING TO SELL ?

Contemplating selling an entire ESTATE, any size COLLECTION or SINGLE ITEM OF QUALITY ?

THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC IS NOT GOING AWAY ANYTIME SOON…….. INFECTIONS ARE ACTUALLY ON THE RISE IN MANY AREAS !

A great many smart people are working on vaccines yet a "HERD IMMUNITY" is months away at best. Most experts agree that we will not see relief until late in 2021 at the earliest. Even with the vaccines becoming more readily available it will be years until the selling processes of personal property (any asset other than real estate) goes back to pre-pandemic means (if ever).

  • LIFE MUST GO ON !  We have needs. One need we have is a need to SELL or BUY personal property. The reasons are varied…….for Estate Liquidation purposes, Financial reasons or simply Downsizing / Upsizing we need to exchange things!

WE MUST DO BUSINESS SAFELY !

Estate Consultants believe that we have developed the safest, most innovative and effective process for facilitating the buying or selling of personal property. It is fun and safe for the buyer and profitable for the seller. We have been using the new process for many months now and have found it to be wildly successful ! CONDUCTING ESTATE SALES IN A PANDEMIC

Estate Consultants have  completed many Estate liquidation sales since the Covid 19 pandemic began. Implementing new methods and procedures to counter the negative effects this virus has wrought. The first was a single owner’s collection of nearly 300 antique and vintage dolls. The second was the full contents of a home and barn on a country road in Auburn, NY.  There have been many more since those first sales and all of them have been  aresounding success!

The final sale we held before the pandemic was on February 29th in Dryden, NY. That sale was held at the beginning of the flood of information we were about to receive regarding the covid 19 virus. Soon thereafter the State was shut down and there were no longer any gatherings of people. No estate sales or auctions. Slowly business cautiously came back. It was a learning process for all of us.

When the virus began to take hold we here at Estate Consultants immediately began thinking of how the business was going to change. How would we need to change? We gave it tremendous thought and talked to many people in the estate liquidation business about the best path forward. We spoke to our buyers and the general public about how their buying habits would change.

It was clear immediately that the sales needed to go online. The next question …. how?

We have a view from more than 40 years full time in the estate liquidation business and have conducted dozens of online auctions over the years. Traditionally we would build an online auction with the best bits and pieces from many estates. Only the most expensive items would be included. The sale would be limited to 350 or 400 items with a minimum value of $100.00 each. We would do this because of the expense of conducting this type of sale and because of the specialized audience we were trying to attract.

The typical estate tag sale includes items that will find their most appropriate market within 50 miles of the location of the estate and not require a national or even regional audience. They did not warrant the type of attention and expense given to online auctions in the past.

We have seen many changes through the years. Styles and tastes change….economies change….. politics change. Never have we seen anything like the change that this virus has brought! We know that there will be a continuing need for folks to sell personal property from estates and a desire for the public to buy that property. In order to continue to provide our services we had to anticipate the new buying habits in our market.

We thought long and hard over the past few months on the most appropriate way to move forward in this new environment. We had to consider the needs of our clients ( selling houses full of merchandise for fair prices in a timely manner ) and the needs of our buyers ( buying useful and unique objects at fair prices) while maintaining a safe environment.

When conducting business in today’s covid 19 environment business owners take on immense responsibility to protect the public.

This is our overriding goal: That we will endeavor to not create a situation whereby anyone will feel uncomfortable or worry that they may contract the corona virus. We will take all necessary precautions to mitigate that risk. We will conduct business in the safest manner possible through individual appointments, virtual sales, continual sanitizing, mandatory mask wearing (we will supply masks & hand sanitizer) and social distancing.

We will follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines.

Therefore, we will now handle estate tag sales differently. We will arrange the home as we would for a traditional tag sale, sorting, cleaning and inventorying the items in the home. Yet under the new system we will create a catalog of the items in the estate that have a value of $25.00 or more and present those items to a vast, virtual, audience! Using  print ads in local papers in combination with Estate Consultants website, our online auction platform, Facebook, Craigslist, Estatesales.net and other online, commercial, media along with Estate Consultants proprietary email list which includes thousands of buyers locally and nationally (developed over years in the business) we will market the catalog to tens of thousands of buyers with the goal of reaching the most interested audience! Items will have an extremely low minimum starting price in order to encourage bidding and to show that we are serious sellers. If a higher starting price is needed, we will state the starting price for all to see. This will add to the confidence buyers have in this sale. Whereby traditionally we would price each item in the home the new system employs the age old & trusted auction system for arriving at the selling price. These auctions each have a specific ending time (specified in advance) and will have a “soft close”. A soft close to an auction allows for an easy ending with no hassles and no stress to bidders. When the auction item gets within 3 minutes of its specified ending and that item receives another bid then the end of the auction for that item is extended for an additional 3 minutes. If another bid is registered on that item within the additional (extended) 3 minutes of the item’s end then the auction of that item is extended for another 3 minutes……..and so on. This could potentially go on indefinitely yet when it happens the “bidding war” is typically over within two or three extensions. So if an online estate auction is held at 6:00 PM on a Friday night the first item in the catalog ( Item #1) will sell ( go across the block) at 6:00. The second item (Item #2) will sell 10 seconds later….and the third item (Item #3) 10 seconds after that and so on until all the cataloged items have sold and all extensions are exhausted.

The catalog is presented online via an easy to follow link in all of our advertising and on Estate Consultants website. Auction items are available for personal inspection, by appointment, anytime during the week before the sale.

All the items that we do not catalog will be available to those folks who were successful in the auction portion of the sale. As they come to retrieve their items, by appointment, on a first come first served basis they will be able to peruse & purchase those uncatalogued items. Available will be the pots & pans, odd kitchenware, bric-a-brac, miscellaneous hand tools, odd items from drawers & desks, garage, basement, closets and general household items of value yet not valuable enough to catalog. This will be an added reason for those bidding to make that “extra” bid on the auction item! We will solicit “end lot” buyers to clean out the remainder and leave home “broom clean” after the sale.

Benefits with the new system:

•Overall higher prices

•There is less unsold merchandise left over after the sale

•More control of the merchandise (less pilferage)

•No large crowds of people at the home. Everything is done by appointment

•Social distancing is a given

•All bidders are pre-qualified and have a credit card on file

•Many more interested buyers view your items than in a traditional sale

•The buyers are happier in general with their purchases

•Payment is made within 15 days of sale date

We must conduct commerce in order to feed our families, pay our bills and maintain our business, yet we will do it in a safe manner. We will not create an environment that will allow the spread of the corona virus.

Some numbers from our past two sales:

•36,378 Catalog Views

•206 Registered Bidders

•2067 total Bids

•$22,795.00

If there is an estate liquidation in your future or if you have a single item or collection to sell, please contact us to discuss details. No pressure….no obligation. Estate Consultants will offer sound advice with value estimates.

CNY’s Premier Estate Liquidation Company

To our valued and future clients

This notice is intended to give you a clearer understanding of how we will handle Estate Sales going forward in these unprecedented times. There are a lot of moving parts and estates will have different challenges to overcome. It is a changed world from a few months ago. We believe that, after more than 40 years in this business, this is, and will be, the most comprehensive, and profitable (for our clients) approach, to estate liquidation in the post "Covid" future !

First, upon previewing a sale, the contents will determine their path to liquidation. Some items will attract a local audience. Other items will need to be advertised regionally to reach the appropriate market, while some items will require a national or international audience in order to achieve the highest price. Estate Consultants prides itself upon being sensitive to these differences and having the contacts to make this happen. It is ultimately important for a company handling any sale to be able to accurately identify the items that they are charged with selling.

Given the world conditions, as a result of covid-19, business must be conducted differently today.

Estate Consultants will continue its best practices, but initiate the following processes.

We will take inventory and set the property up, so that the items being sold will be shown in their "best light". We will sort items, empty furniture, cupboards & storage areas; make minor repairs where necessary; clean and display the merchandise. We will photograph and write a description which may include age, origin, materials used in the construction of, size, provenance and condition of all items above a certain value ( say $50.00 ) . This process involves more details and a greater need for accuracy given the potential for absentee bidding.

One of our best tools for reaching the public is an on-line catalog on Estate Consultants website. Cataloged items are posted with a reasonable reserve price, below which the item will not sell. The catalog will be available for viewing AND pre-bidding for the week prior to the sale date

Estate Consultants will also write and place advertisements which will attract a passionate audience locally, nationally and internationally, to attract the most competitive buyers. These advertisements may take several forms. Including, but not limited to: proprietary email list of more than 5,000 buyers who have attended an Estate Consultants event, notification to thousands of buyers on the "Auction Ninja" on-line auction / estate sale platform, paid Facebook ads, ads in Facebook groups, notification on Estate Consultants Facebook page, advertisements in appropriate locations on Craigslist, ads placed on sites such as "estatesales.net", "garagesales.com", etc., advertisements in local papers and if needed, ads in specialty publications ( for collections of things ). These public notifications, along with a yard sign, will denote the type of merchandise being sold, the auction date, clear / easy direction to the online catalog, our telephone number to call with questions and to schedule a personal preview of the sale..

In addition we will create a video which will give the viewer a " walk-through" preview of the entire sale while highlighting various notable aspects

As the sale process continues, appointments will be made for those interested in personally inspecting the merchandise. These "previews" will be conducted in the safest manner and with precautions including one party previewing at a time, having hand sanitizer & masks available for those previewing, cleaning between appointments, etc.

Estate Consultants / Auction Ninja will vet all bidders for their ability to pay for the items that they purchase.

During the actual auction, each item to be sold will be assigned a specific selling time separate from any other item ( approximately 15 to 30 seconds apart ).As the auction of an item is coming to a close there will be a "soft close". This means that if there is a bid within 5 minutes of the scheduled close of the item being auctioned, the closing time for that item will be extended for an additional 5 minutes. If there is another bid during that extended period the auction gets extended for another 5 minutes........ and so on until a full 5 minutes pass without a bid. This will give bidders comfort in their decision making process.

After the suction, Estate Consultants / Auction Ninja will collect all necessary payments, fees and taxes within 24 hours of the sale on most items and will schedule pickups over the days / week following the sale, again following safe practices

Items not picked up in the allotted time frame will be considered abandoned and the payment will not be refunded. Abandoned items may be resold.

Residual items (items valued at less than $50.00) and those that fail to sell at auction will be made available, for outright sale, to the successful bidders in the auction when they come to pick up their auction winnings. This will be handled on a first come first served basis providing added benefit to buyers and give more incentive for folks to make a purchase at the auction.

Estate Consultants will make arrangements to ship any items that sell to a national or international buyer who is unable to make the trip personally to retrieve their purchases.

After the sales are complete, Estate Consultants will offer options for disposal of any items remaining after the sale / pickup time. This may include finding an "end Lot" buyer, donation to a charity or some other option that is suitable for the specific situation.

In closing and completing the sale and disposition of all items, as agreed upon, payment and settlement paperwork will be made within three weeks of the sale date.

In answering contract expectations, the whole process will take approximately four to six weeks from start to finish barring any unforeseen obstacles. Estate Consultants fee is 30% commission of the total sale. There are no added charges for advertising nor anything else regarding executing a typical sale. In the event of extraordinary circumstances, such as the need for a dumpster for use during the preparation process, we would discuss that and agree upon the cost in advance. We hope this clarifies the process.

HOW TO SELL TODAY

Covid 19 & Selling Personal Property

How to get started…… PICTURES ! If you have certain questions egarding specific objects or general questions about a group of objects taking pictures is a good place to start ! With the Covid Plague threatening the world travel is restricted. It is not as convenient as it once was to have an appraiser, auctioneer or antiques dealer make a trip to come & have a look at what you have to sell. Nor can you simply pack the items up and head to the corner Antiques Shop. Estate Consultants has been conducting initial evaluations through photographs for DECADES ! Long before the internet, back in the dark ages, we would get dozens of 35 mm photographs a month from Estate Lawyers, Executors, Antiques Dealers, folks looking to sell items or from those who just wanted to know more about what they had. After so many years we feel we have become experts at this process. The wear on the edge of a piece of furniture may be a clue in determining it’s age or the way the light is reflected on the surface of a picture may help determine if it is a true painting or simply a print and myriad other clues will combine to help us in offering sound item specifics and value advice!

When taking pictures it is not important to be another “ Ansel Adams “ it is important to get a couple things right.

First - Take as best an initial overall picture of the item or group of items as you can. Three dimensional objects are best if taken from an angle & not straight on. Show a little bit of one side of the item in the overall picture. If taking a picture of a whole room, try to get into a corner & take a shot from that perspective. It may be necessary to take 2 pictures of the room from here in order to get the whole room in.

Second - Take close up photographs of any distinguishing features, signatures or damage to the piece. Third and possibly most important……… a picture of the back or bottom of the piece. It seems unlikely yet we can tell more about a piece from this angle than from the overall picture from the front!

Finally - A little story

Along with the pictures you should give a brief description of the known history of the item or group of items. Ex. “ It belonged to George Washington “ or “ My grandfather was a watch repairman and this is a picture of his shop “. Family oral history / tradition is ok as it may help to fill in gaps for us or lead us down another path. Part of the value of an object is in the story behind the item. Early 20th century salesman “ Elmer Wheeler “ famously said “ We don’t sell the steak we sell the sizzle ! “. Everyone likes to know the story behind the object. With an interesting story the item becomes more valuable. A signature on a document is just ink on paper until you learn that it is a document written during the American Civil War and signed by President Abraham Lincoln! Then it becomes more desirable to own. It is a just useful porch rocking chair until it is identified as the exact “ P & P “ rocking chair that President John F. Kennedy loved to sit and rock in while contemplating decisions that would effect the world ! Because of the association with Kennedy that $100.00 chair sold at auction for over $400,000.00! The history of an item or “ Provenance “ can make the item many times more valuable ! It is important to consider.

So, From wherever you are in the United States, Estate Consultants will gladly accept your pictures of items for evaluation. Simply snap some pictures with your phone and email them along with any history that you might have to estateconsultantsinfo@gmail.com. We will promptly get back to you with our thoughts and advice.

Sincerely,

Molly Conroy

Covid 19 – How it effects the sale of Estates & Personal Property

Covid 19 – How it effects the sale of Personal Property

When selling an entire estate, single piece of furniture, set of china or nearly any piece of personal property the seller must create a sense of urgency surrounding the item that they are selling and attempt to show the item in the most favorable light. The buyer will enter the deal with a certain amount of interest in the item you are selling, be that interest great or small. There must be something compelling the person to buy the item you are selling other than price. One way to accomplish this is to place a time limit on its sale. The item will only be offered for sale for a set period of time after which it will no longer be available. Estate tag sales typically offer a day or two when the item will be offered for sale, to the largest group of buyers the seller can attract that day, during set hours. The seller creates urgency by placing the item in front of multiple potential buyers attending the sale at the same time giving them all the opportunity to own the item, either at a fixed price or via auction style format ( where the price is not determined until the auction is over ).

If employing the auction style format for selling it is important in today’s environment to know the “reasonable “ values going into the sale and setting a fair minimum. This will avoid the potential for literally “giving “ things away. Most sellers feel that if an item will bring only a small fraction of what it is worth then they would like the option of not selling it and/or donating it to charity thereby giving someone truly needy the opportunity to own it or benefit from its sale.

Since folks cannot gather in large groups at the present time and are sure to be hesitant of crowds in the future, the traditional estate tag sale or auction is no longer appropriate. What is a seller to do? Find new ways to present the items they are selling to the buying population of course!

Estate Consultants can help!

Estate Consultants is in the market every day listening, learning, and trying to anticipate new selling / buying trends.

One way is for you (the seller ) to employ Estate Consultants ( the agent ) to bring your item(s) to market in an appropriate, internationally marketed sale. This is a sale that is limited to professional sellers with product knowledge. The general public is not allowed to participate in the “ selling “ end. They are encouraged in the buying end. These sales are put together by HUGE companies known as “Sale Providers “. They are open to the public for all to view and participate in. The sale categories include Antique Furniture, Silver, Jewelry, Oriental Carpets, Coins & Currency, Paintings & Prints, Clocks & Watches, Estate Liquidation, etc. These Sale Providers maintain lists of buyers in the hundreds of thousands around the globe! They depend on professional sellers to :

1) Source the product

2) Choose the appropriate sale to place the item in ( you, the seller, will be notified of the sale date in advance )

3) Write an accurate description including a) age b) origin b) materials used in it’s construction c) importance among its peers d) provenance e) condition, etc. ( the sales are vetted by a team of experts for accuracy )

4) Take detailed photographs of the item from all angles.

5) Answer any questions from potential buyers.

6) Guarantee the authenticity of the item and the description given.

7) Establish a reasonable “minimum“ starting price if it is an auction format

8) Handle all shipping arrangements.

The merchandise need never leave your possession, unless you need to have it moved, until shipping time. Basically, handle all aspects of the sale except promotion and accepting payment.

Payment is made directly to the Sale Provider

.

How does Estate Consultants make money? The Sale Provider will charge the professional seller, Estate Consultants, a wholesale commission rate that is less than that charged to the general public by retail sellers in a normal sale of this type of merchandise. When the settlement is ready, 2 to 4 weeks after the sale date, you will receive a check and paperwork regarding the sale.

How much do I have to pay as the seller? From 18% up to 35% total

The Sale Providers depend upon the professional seller (Estate Consultants) to do the majority of the heavy lifting and the Sale Provider never takes possession of the merchandise. The fee charged by the Sale Provider is generally 15% of the selling price of any object sold (paid by Estate Consultants). Estate Consultants can provide you with access to a worldwide market and personalized attention to the sale of your items. Estate Consultants charges you a commission, that is negotiable, of between 18% and 35%. You will only pay between 18% and 35% total. The fee earned by the Sale Provider comes out of Estate Consultant’s commission.

This service allows for a more powerful sale, targeted to a specific audience of extremely interested buyers and leading to higher prices.

Contact Estate Consultants for more details or to discuss what you have to sell.

COVID 19 PANDEMIC

Have an estate to settle? Downsizing and have a few pieces of Artwork, Antique Furniture, Jewelry, Coins or other personal property to sell and are wondering what options you have in today’s COVID-19 environment?

The team at Estate Consultants has the advantage of a very long history in this business. We have been considering this since it became evident in February that it could affect our industry. We have written down, in this letter to our clients, some of our thoughts on the outlook for the Estate/Personal Property liquidation business in the future.

As we go through this Pandemic, and come out the other side, the estate liquidation business will look quite different than it did going in. There will be a hesitancy in gathering in large groups. There will be a hesitancy in purchasing for fear of the future economy (will I have enough money to pay my bills?) There will be, at least for a while, a glut of merchandise on the market. All these factors lead to the conclusion that home furnishings/antiques will be very difficult to sell. We will need to adjust our ideas of value downward. The prices for general line merchandise that we were seeing in January will most likely be cut to a third or worse. That is IF we can even find a buyer. Those estate liquidation businesses that survive this pandemic will need to devise new ways to bring items to market or otherwise dispose of the merchandise that will be coming their way. Because of the lack of both retail & wholesale buyers in the market I believe that there will be many more donations to charities.

With that being said, the need to capitalize on the truly important/valuable items to be found in estates will be more important than ever! There will always be buyers, at some level, for the things that have historically been deemed to be “important“ in various fields and areas of collecting. Be it Paintings, Prints, Sculpture or other Fine Art... Estate Jewelry…. Coins, Currency & Stamps……. Antique or Quality Furniture……Silver beyond the “scrap “ value....Fine Oriental Carpets or other decorative Objects of Virtue. Being able to identify these items and knowing where/how to sell them will be more important than ever!

To know the market locally, regionally, nationally as well as internationally is the only way to thrive in the post-pandemic environment!

Estate Consultants is a 4th generation Estate Liquidation company with origins dating back nearly 100 years! We have seen many changes in the business during that time and have weathered many storms both economic and cultural. Never have we been faced with circumstances like these!

People will continue to pass away, to downsize or experience a change in lifestyle so there will always be a need for someone to assist with disposing of things that are no longer wanted or needed. It is the means if that disposal that needs to change as well. Should you consider an auction, outright sale to a dealer, a public tag sale, a charitable contribution or some combination of all of these in order to fulfill your goals?

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks there was a great, renewed interest in things made in America. This feeling of patriotism extended into the world of Personal Property with an overall surge in interest in American Antiques, American Folk Art, etc...anything made in America. Conversely interest in things made in the Middle East took a nosedive! You could not give Oriental Rugs away. That was a problem that began on 9/11 and was just beginning to get better when the pandemic hit. The Market for Oriental Carpets has taken another hit if for a different reason, in fact the sale of luxury goods in general are down. Folks are going to be hard pressed to spend their money on fancy floor covering when they are concerned about paying the mortgage!

THIS TOO SHALL PASS!

Furniture will break ……mechanical things will wear out…. people will need a place to live. There will always be a need for personal property….both new and used. Human beings are fascinating creatures. Not only do we have a primal need to “nest“ we have to make that nest our own by putting our unique spin on it and expressing our personal style with particular furnishings and decorations. Since not everyone can afford to buy things new and the most unique items are to be found on the secondary market, in estates tag sales, auctions etc., there will always be a need for someone to facilitate their sale. There will always be Estate Liquidators. What their business will look like on the other side of this plague is yet to be seen!

Estate Consultants have a long, informed view of what that business will be. Both in the short term and in the long term.

In the short term, as the virus eases, the American consumer will have less money to spend, there will be a glut of merchandise on the market (more merchandise plus less money equals lower prices). People will think twice about attending a public gathering and will be looking more and more to the internet to fill their needs. Prices will be down for all but the most expensive items. There will be an EXPLOSION in the online auction business. Those sellers formerly not using “online“ sales will be racing to get their sales posted online.

Since this is an event affecting the world, other countries will be in a similar economic position as us here in the United States . Many of these countries manufacture home goods which will flood the American market pushing prices down even further. The outlook is bleak in the short term.

In the long term, as we enter into “a new normal“ people will feel continuously more comfortable working remotely, learning remotely, seeking advice remotely and buying items remotely through the internet. Of course, there will always be folks that resist this because they are the type of buyer that needs to touch and smell what they are buying. We are well aware of these folks. That group of buyers is diminishing yet still exists. So, we deal with them on a case to case basis. Millennials have grown up with a computer in their hand. They know no different than getting all their news from the internet. They look to their smart phone or their computer to find the answer to virtually every question. They buy EVERYTHING online. You will still find the best and most appropriate market locally for some items (those that are readily available everywhere or difficult to ship), yet the majority of items valued at $100.00 or more and easily shipped will be selling online. It is not a fad that is going away. Buying household goods, Antiques, Fine Art and other objects that we hold dear is only going to become easier, more convenient and acceptable as time goes on. With all the technological innovations, inventions and new ideas that have arisen from weeks of self-distancing and staying at home, the Coronavirus is only going to push us more quickly in that direction.

With that in mind Estate Consultants has innovative ways to shake up the Estate Sale and Auction business. Using our vast product knowledge, specific industry insight, the latest technology, conventional and social media marketing we will tailor a plan to fit your needs. You may have items that are best sold to a local market. We will know that! You may have items that require a regional or National audience in order to achieve the best price. We will know that! Or you may have items that demand an international market because of their desirability and rarity. We will know that! We pride ourselves on our ability to identify gems among a field of rocks! And for making rocks seem like gems!

REMEMBER IF YOU CANNOT IDENTIFY AN ITEM CORRECTLY YOU CANNOT EXPECT TO SELL IT TO THE BEST AND MOST APPROPRIATE BUYER ……. THE BUYER THAT WILL PAY THE MOST MONEY!

Estate Consultants will help you identify what you have to sell, develop a marketing plan for your items, present your items to the appropriate audience, handle all necessary follow-through, finalize the sale, arrange for shipping and issue you a check with settlement report immediately upon completion.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss the market, items that you have to sell, the value of those items and the best path to successfully selling them in today’s uneasy world.

You cannot know everything! In addition to their own vast, personal product knowledge Estate Consultants have amassed connections, after so many decades in the business, of a deep well of experts from which to draw upon. We have the smarts to “know what we don’t know“ and humbleness to seek the advice of those who do know when we don't !
